Exploring Bibury
My adventure began in Bibury, often hailed as one of the prettiest villages in England. As I stepped into the village, I felt as if I had been transported back in time. The iconic Arlington Row, with its quaint cottages lined along the river, was even more beautiful than I had imagined. I spent time wandering the narrow streets, admiring the picturesque views and the gentle flow of the River Coln.
For those looking to stay in Bibury, I highly recommend The Swan Hotel. Its stunning grounds and welcoming atmosphere made it the perfect retreat after a day of exploring.
Stow-on-the-Wold Adventures
Next, I made my way to Stow-on-the-Wold, a bustling market town steeped in history. The market square, once a hub for traders, now hosts an array of antique shops and charming boutiques. I spent time wandering through the shops, discovering unique treasures and enjoying the local craftsmanship.
A highlight was a visit to St. Edwards Church to see the most famous church door that is rumored to have been the inspiration of J R R Tolkien’s “Doors of Durien” that appears in a scene in the The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Porch House is a fantastic choice. Its rich history and cozy ambiance provide a perfect backdrop for a restful night.
Charming Bourton-on-the-Water
My final stop was Bourton-on-the-Water, a village that truly lives up to its nickname, the “Venice of the Cotswolds.” This quaint village became my favorite stop. The moment I arrived, I was enchanted by the picturesque bridges crossing the River Windrush and the lively energy of the village. Strolling along the riverbanks, I took in the sights and sounds of families enjoying picnics and children feeding the ducks during a festival.
I spent some time walking the streets nearby the village center, did a little shopping, and stopped for a latte at The Coffee Hub and had a lovely chat with the owner for a few minutes. For those planning an overnight stay, The Lansdowne Bed and Breakfast offers a blend of comfort and history, making it an ideal base for exploring.
Until next time…
Reflecting on my journey through the Cotswolds, I am overwhelmed by the warmth and beauty of these villages. Each place offered its unique charm and a sense of history that felt alive. I encourage anyone looking for a serene getaway to explore Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Stow-on-the-Wold. Who knows what hidden gems you’ll discover along the way?
